[SOS-PCA] [EXTERNAL] When is Poa secunda ripe?

We collected stems of seed heads in the field and brought them into the lab to strip the heads. Rawlins, Wyoming is very windy most days so we felt we had a better opportunity to acquire seed that way, rather than lost the seed to the wind.

Hi Sarah,

You're correct that all grasses should be hand stripped before sending to Bend. I understand folks have less time and hands in the field these days, but I always encourage hand stripping on site whenever possible rather than cutting and bringing back to the office.

I'd be interested to hear other collecting teams' experiences with off site ripening of POSE?

Thanks,
Leah

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [SOS-PCA] When is Poa secunda ripe?

Hi Seed Collectors,

Can anyone offer advice on how to tell when Poa secunda seed is ready to collect? I assume that if the inflorescence is falling apart that it's probably dispersing and therefore ready, but can it be picked any earlier than that? Does it after-ripen at all? Should I be stripping inflorescences in the field or taking whole ones? I was guessing Bend would want them stripped, but does that affect ripening?

Thanks for any information you have!
