Fri May 5 13:42:15 CDT 2017
There were 26 participants on the call.
*NATIONAL OFFICE UDATES*:
· Rachel Hosna will begin her position as the SOS National
Coordinator on May 8th. Rachel has been involved in SOS as a collector and
has assisted with coordination of the Colorado Plateau Native Plant
Program’s collections out of the Moab Field Office. After working in the
west for the past 4 years Rachel is moving to Washington, DC!
· The SOS webpage (on the new BLM website) has a few additions
including a link to the SOS Data Portal and a quick guide to data entry.
The SOS website (www.blm.gov/sos) is the primary resource for Technical
Protocol and all required forms, including the SOS datasheet, clearance
form, annual report template, herbarium guidance and other items.
· Please note: Locality data for SOS collections are not to be made
public.
*CONSERVATION/WORKING COLLECTIONS AND OPERATIONAL COLLECTIONS:*
· Of a collection of 10,000 seed 2/3 will go into long-term
conservation storage.
· The remaining 1/3 enters the SOS Working Collection stored at the
Western Regional Plant Introduction Station in Pullman, WA
- The working collection is made available to researchers, generally
in small amounts around 100 to 200 seeds
· If the collection is larger than 10,000 seed, seed remaining
after the conservation and working collections are met goes into the
Operational Collection. This seed is intended for specific projects needing
larger amounts of seed – common garden studies, grow-out, etc. – and
coordinated by State and Ecoregional program leads.
- Operational Collections are stored at the Bend Seed Extractory,
SOS East partner organizations, or returned to the collecting team at the
end of the season.
*BEND SEED EXTRACTORY*:
If you will be requesting seed collections back for specific projects,
please get your seed to Bend as soon as possible. Requests must be made
through the BLM National Office (Rachel Hosna) and a complete Bend
Clearance Form (available on the SOS website) is required for processing.
· ONLY request seed that you need for a specific project. Bend
processes a limited number of accessions for return each year. Requesting
all you accessions back denies other field offices their seed requests.
· Bend reaches capacity for requests in early December.
*ELEMENTS OF AN SOS COLLECTION*:
In addition to native seed, every SOS collection includes:
· *3 voucher specimens* – field office, regional herbarium,
Smithsonian. Please see the attached document on shipping voucher
specimens. General information on collecting and labeling herbarium voucher
specimens can be found on the SOS website. Contact Erika Gardner at the
Smithsonian for specific questions: gardnere at si.edu Phone: 202.633.0936
· *3 photographs* – plant/flower, habitat/landscape, and seed.
Photographs must be sent to the national office at the end of the season.
· *Data Sheet* – A paper copy must accompany every seed collection
sent to Bend and an electronic copy must be sent to the national office.
*SPECIALIST IDENTIFICATION*:
On the SOS data sheet you will notice there is a place to record *Specialist
Identification* – this is a taxonomic expert such as herbarium staff at the
regional herbarium where your vouchers are being sent or the botanist at
your field office, not a CLM intern or volunteer.
*SOS COMMUNICATIONS*:
A few ideas for new forms of communication between SOS collection teams
were suggested during the call, but please utilize the current SOS email
listserv. This is the main forum for SOS communications from the National
Office as well as between SOS collection teams, partner organizations and
individual seed collectors. It is open for all to use and simple to post
messages:
· Compose an email message- this can include links to useful
websites, interesting articles, upcoming webinars, sharing of innovative
seed collecting techniques or just a note of encouragement to your fellow
SOS comrades!
· Send email message to: SOS at lists.plantconservation.org
· Your message will go out to the whole SOS community and others
can reply to your message
· Please contact lriibe at blm.gov if you are not yet signed up to the
SOS listserv.
· The SOS listserv is one of 5 email lists maintained by the Plant
Conservation Alliance. You are welcome to subscribe to all of them! More
info here: http://lists.plantconservation.org/mailman/listinfo
Thank you to everyone who participated in the call!
The next SOS Collectors Call is scheduled for Tuesday, June 6th. Please
contact lriibe at blm.gov or rhosna at blm.gov if you need the call in number.
