The following are research-based seed collection opportunities. Take a
look and feel free to participate if your priorities match up with some of
the research projects below. If you are going to participate in any of
these research projects, please do not let SOS collections dip below the
goal of 10,000 seed per collection.

*Seed needed for Rush skeletonweed biocontrol:*

The following request comes from Montana State University. If you can
provide seed, please contact Dr. Jeffrey Littlefield
(jeffreyl at montana.edu<https://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&to=jeffreyl@montana.edu>)
by email and cc Jim Jacobs
(jim.jacobs at mt.usda.gov<https://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&to=jim.jacobs@mt.usda.gov>
) and Jim Biggs. Dr. Littlefield will provide progress reports to PMCs/PMSs
providing germplasm. Dr. Littlefield is trying to get the word out, so if
you know of others who may be able to help, please put them in contact with
him. If you have questions please feel free to contact me. Thanks,

Rush skeletonweed, *Chondrilla juncea*, is a difficult to manage invader
infesting over six million acres in the western U.S. It is listed as a
noxious weed in nine states (AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NV, OR, SD, WA). Currently
there are no approved biological control insects for its management. The
Montana State University quarantine laboratory in Bozeman is addressing
this critical need by conducting host-specificity studies to characterize
the suitability of the crown moth, *Oporopsamma wertheimsteini*, as a new
potential biocontrol agent for rush skeletonweed. To accomplish this they
need to test insects on potential alternate host plants that are not
commonly available on the seed or nursery market.

We are requesting help in collecting seed or young plants, or identifying
collection locations for the quarantine laboratory. A critical needs list
of plant species is given below. The *very high priority* plants for
testing are *Crepis* sp. and *Microseris nutans*. The *high priority*plants
for testing are* **Krigia *sp*.*, but not *K. bicolor*. If you have seed of
these of these species or know of available plants or populations please
contact Jeff Littlefield at
jeffreyl at montana.edu<https://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&to=jeffreyl@montana.edu>.
Also, if you know of anyone who might know of seed, plants, or populations
please put them in contact with Dr. Littlefield.

If you can provide seed, plants, or locations, please contact Jeff
Littlefield, jeffreyl at montana.edu<https://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&to=jeffreyl@montana.edu>,
(406) 994-4722. Thank you.

Astragalus filipes (basalt milkvetch)

Dalea ornata (Western prairie clover)

Heliomeris multiflora nevadensis (Showy goldeneye)

Penstemon pachyphyllus (Thickleaf beardtongue)

Lomatium nudicaule (Barestem biscuitroot)

Protocol: Need at least 3000 seeds from at least 50 widely separated plants
per population

Seedlots need not be cleaned.

*Bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata) Reciprocal Planting Study*

Study will test seed zones for bluebunch wheatgrass and provide information
on potential impacts of climate change on the species. Need 0.25 lbs
collections from selected seed zones in southeastern Oregon and
southwestern Idaho. Contact Matt Fisk (mfisk at fs.fed.us) or Nancy Shaw (
nshaw at fs.fed.us) for additional information, seed ripening dates, potential
collection areas.
