This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time, seasonal (May-September) Biological Sciences Research Technician 3 position for the Seed Lab at Oregon State University (OSU). This position is located in Montana.

This position exists to support the project PI and Co-PI, and any Bio Science Tech’s and graduate students on the FBIC/BLM Grassland Restoration Project with all aspects of Traditional Ecological knowledge (TEK), including logistics, data collection, and outreach on the Fort Belknap Indian reservation and surrounding lands. This position utilizes technical skills and knowledge to independently lead field work and field crews in support these efforts.

70% Lead fieldwork data collection, working on BLM land and Tribal land in Montana.
Collect Assessment Inventorying and Monitoring (AIM) data per BLM protocols by establishing plots on BLM and Tribal lands and leading data collection on: cover type, % bare mineral soil, flora present by species, any species of plants present that are culturally significant to Tribal Nations, canopy % and height, plant/forest community composition, including DBH and height of any trees present and identification by species. Conduct biodiversity assessment of all plant species present (forb, herbs, shrubs, trees. Collect soil samples and wildlife eDNA data from within plots. Set up camera traps and maintain them and collect data from them. Make seed collections using Seeds of Success protocols to be sent to the Federal Seed Repository to be used for restoration of Tribal and Federal lands. Collect and press herbaria sampling for shipment to the Smithsonian Institute herbarium, and other herbaria.

20% Lead Work: Leads crew by planning, assigning, and approving daily work. Provides training and technical guidance to the crew; answers questions in the field. Assigns work locations, check-in/safety partners, vehicle assignments, and work schedule. Gives safety reminders specific to work locations and weather conditions. Maintains radio contact with crew members at all times. Reviews all data collected by crew members to ensure integrity, documents any concerns, and assigns plots to revisit as necessary. Enters data electronically, and independently performs preliminary data analysis, reporting results to project leaders.

10% Represent the project at conferences, community gatherings, and meetings for the purpose of outreach.

Driving will be required to conduct field work, outreach, and work within the community.
