[SOS-PCA] Collecting from tall trees

Hello from the Oregon Coast,
For our big, coastal maples we use a two-person method where one person on the ground pulls a limb down using a purpose-built pole with a hook on the end. Their partner stands on a pruning ladder and harvests from the bent limb and helps the hook find the next limb as they work their way around the tree. We're still only harvesting the bottom 1/3 of the tree, but that tends to be adequate and doesn't require any climbing.
The hook is a clothes-hangar stuck on the end of electrical conduit and looks terrifying, but functional.
Be Well,
Asa

Subject: [SOS-PCA] Collecting from tall trees
Hi folks,
We have a crew looking for tips for collecting from tall populations of Olneya tesota (desert ironwood) and Parkinsonia florida (blue paolo verde).
If anyone has experience with the species, please reply to the SOS listserv with your tips and tricks!
And/or if you have experience collecting from very tall trees, that would be a great discussion for the listserv.
Some common methods include the following, but please feel free to add your favorite!
* Using apple/fruit picker baskets
* Using an extendable tree pruner
* Placing a tarp beneath the tree and shaking it
Thanks,
Anna
