Overview

Utah State University seeks an individual to represent Utah Crop Improvement Association in central and southern Utah and assist in the seed certification program and in the management of the Sustainable Ag Education (SAGE) Center in Sanpete county. The department will hire the successful applicant at the Research Technician II or III level, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities

Assist in, promote and manage duties related to the seed certification program to farmers and other public by maintaining high visibility of certification program and encouraging the use of certified seed. Applicant must be easily accessible to farmers, agriculture, seed growers, and other related seed industry personnel. Applicant will need to accurately identify rangeland plants and assess wildland seed collection practices and yield potential. Applicant will also assist farmers through seed field and farm equipment inspections, seed production practices, and monitoring wildland seed collectors. They must learn to accurately assess crop quality factors in the field to meet seed certification standards. The applicant will also make other seed processing related inspections to help seed lots meet certification standards. Travel to look at wildland seed collection sites throughout the Western United States will be needed. Accurate and prompt record keeping, general office work, and reporting will be required.



Manage irrigated pasture, agronomy, and community garden plots for research and demonstration in Ephraim, UT. Assist with 4-H youth programs. Some of the responsibilities include: Tilling, planting, weeding, sprinkler irrigation and electric fence maintenance. Ability to lift heavy objects, use power tools, and drive and maintain farm equipment. Develop conduct and report on research projects. Work load will average out to about 40 hours/ week annually (100% time).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Research Technician II):

Two years of experience or an associate degree/vocational training is required.



Minimum Qualifications (Research Technician III):

Four years of experience; or an associate degree plus two years of experience; or a bachelor’s degree; or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required.

  *   Applicant will be expected to learn to identify reclamation plants and seeds on wildland sites.
  *   Applicant should also have experience in production agriculture, preferably small grains, alfalfa seed, and grass seed, and be able to recognize genetic off-types, weeds, and diseases that potentially contaminate seed crops.
  *   Applicant must also be able to perform general agricultural related labor including walking in uneven terrain, climbing, and tolerating extreme weather conditions, dust, and pollen.
  *   Applicant must have good personal and communication skills to work with, understand, and resolve concerns with farmers, seedsmen, and other agricultural colleagues.
  *   Applicant will need to effectively communicate with colleagues.
  *   Vehicle will be provided by employer but occasional use of personal vehicle may be needed (mileage reimbursed). A Flexible work schedule is needed with concentration of work load during planting, seed harvest, and seed processing seasons.
  *   Experience in farm management.
  *   Experience using basic computer programs to communicate and document research.
