[SOS-PCA] July 2022 Call Notes

Hi everyone,

Below are the call notes from today (July 5th). Thank you to Leah for a great presentation about her research on seed weights using the SOS National Data!

  *   Digital Data Collection
     *   Please continue sending any questions, error logs, or general feedback to me. As you start to wrap up collections and send the seeds, please make sure the data look correct in Geoplatform.
  *   Bend
     *   Great job labeling and sealing seed shipments so far - keep up the good work! If you have any questions about shipping or packaging, you can continue to email Kayla but the assistant Bend manager, Sarah, is going to be on detail for a few months so Kayla may not respond. She said no news is good news though! Feel free to 'CC me (Anna) on any emails to Bend and I will answer them if I can.
     *   *A note from Kayla that was sent after the call - A few folks have had questions about "no pest strips". The use of "no pest” strips is not to kill the insects eating the seed, but to kill the insects that bite us when we open the bag. This was implemented specifically for parasitic itch mites on our end. It is helpful when it kills things from eating seed, but often times the damage is done in the field before the collection sits in the bag. I hope that helps.  Please use pest strips on all collections headed our way.
  *   Iris question
     *   One of the northwest Oregon crews is hoping to make an Iris seed collection, but has experienced seeds shattering prior to the site visit in the past. They are wondering if anyone has experience or luck with collecting the pods and/or stem+pod of Iris just prior to ripening and then having the seeds ripen? I know some crews have tried out bagging the heads of forceful ejector seeds, but that is obviously time intensive. Any thoughts about Iris timing, collecting, or post-collection seed ripening are much appreciated!
