What do fire and drought have to do with seed?
With extreme droughts and nonnative plant communities facilitating a widespread increase in wildfire frequency and intensity, land managers need a strategy to restore and rehabilitate burned areas, and to improve the resiliency of yet-unburned ecosystems.

The National Seed Strategy for Rehabilitation and Restoration (National Seed Strategy), developed by the Plant Conservation Alliance (PCA) Federal Committee in collaboration with the nonfederal partners, provides a coordinated approach to stabilize, rehabilitate, and restore public and private lands in response to altered fire regimes and prolonged droughts. Efforts to improve our Nation's plant supply needs are grouped into four main areas:

  1. Identifying and quantifying seed needs
  2. Undertaking research and improving technologies for seed production and use
  3. Developing tools for land managers
  4. Ensuring good communications.

This month the PCA Federal Committee launched a call for information on work undertaken from 2015 to 2020 that addresses or highlights our native plant materials and restoration needs. This will inform progress under the National Seed Strategy.

Please use the link below to share information on your efforts to respond to fires and droughts that threaten ecosystem services in the U.S. by increasing the availability and use of appropriate plant species. Respondents do not need to be well-versed in the National Seed Strategy to report progress -- the reporting form will walk you through it. Any basic or applied research that aims to improve ecological restoration in the United States or to develop tools or resources that assist land managers in making informed habitat decisions counts.

Please also consider sharing this email with your federal colleagues and federal partners to submit information on any relevant projects conducted, funded, or supported in any way, by the September 1 deadline.

Report your fire and drought projects through the National Seed Strategy reporting portal<https://www.usgs.gov/center-news/national-seed-strategy-report>.
