SOS Collectors' Call

March 4, 2014

There were 22 participants on the call.

*Expectations:*

- All new collectors should become familiar with the SOS Protocol. This
includes all interns and contractors that are hired out of a BLM office.

- SOS Resources - Most questions can be answered by information on the
website (http://www.nps.gov/plants/sos/). If you need additional help,
please contact the National Coordinating Office (mahaidet at blm.gov,
202-912-7233

- Quality Seed Collections - 10,000-20,000 seed is the goal for each SOS
collection, there has been increased interest in seed for research and
development so it is critical that collections meet minimum number goals so
that a working collection is available for distribution. If less than 600
seed is collected there is no working collection available.

- Correctly Identified - Please fully identify collections, to species. If
collections are not fully identified they will not be admitted in the SOS
National Collection. All species identification should be verified by a
specialist either in the BLM office or at a local university or herbarium.

- Complete Data - Until further notice, data sheets should submitted to M.
Haidet and with seed shipments to Bend Seed Extractory. Photos and annual
reports are also expected by Dec. 31 of the collection year. Herbarium
vouchers are to be sent to the Smithsonian and backed up at local or
regional herbaria. If there are any questions related to herbarium
vouchers, please feel free to contact Andrew (ClarkAP at si.edu) or Meghann (
TonerM at si.edu) at the Smithsonian.

- Target lists - Please send targeted species lists to National
Coordinating Office These priorities are set at the office, state and
ecoregional levels.

*Website:*

The new SOS website on BLM servers should launch in the next month.

The new web-based data entry portal should be ready for initial testing in
April. We will develop training materials and post them online as well as
present them at the training sessions and in webinar format. Please note:
This means that collection teams will be responsible for entering all
collections data prior to the end of the season.

materials development program. Sign up for federal and non-federal
participants on DOI Learn. $500 fee for non-federal particpants. Contact
Lori Young (lyoung at blm.gov) if you have questions.

*Discussion:*

Collecting in a drought year - It is especially important to collect in a
drought year. The plants that produce seed in a drought year may contain
valuable drought tolerant genes. Please try to collect from populations
that produce seed, even if they do not meet the 10,000 seed goal.

Next Call: Tuesday, April 1, 2014
