Subject: Native Planting Question

Hi,

My name is Daniel Hocking. I am an Intern with Audubon MD-DC at the
Shehan Audubon Sanctuary. I am starting a small scale wildlife
garden to focus on birds and butterflies. We want to use native
plants and the lists of native plants are readily accessable.
However, our concern is the large deer population on the Sanctuary.
We cull the population each year but never seem to get enough. The
forest is browsed with no understory except American Holly and
Greenbrier (on edges). I am wondering if you know of native plants
for moist soil (peninsula on the eastern shore coastal plain) that
will not be decimated by the deer. I am looking for flowers to
shrubs but nothing too large as it will be a small walking garden by
the office. You can email me at dhocking at care2.com or call me at
(410) 745-9283.

Thank you for your help.
-Daniel Hocking
