[PCA] NEWS: NatiVeg Plant Selection Tool

I appreciate all the comments on the NAS database. Your correct in that it is intended for a “new” audience, mostly lay, who might be hearing the term “native plant” for the first time. So our intent is to ease them into a conservation continuum where eventually they learn more about local (genotype, selection, etc._, and may even begin propagating plants from local sources on their own.

Introducing them to the value of eco-regional plants and what they provide for birds is step one. We’re casting a wide net here. That said, local resources (growers) are given to browsers based on zip code and at least here in PA, many of the vendors are primarily dealing with “local” (as defined below by CNPS) seed source.

Feel free to forward any other comments, corrections, or other notes to me and I will get those to the database team at HQ.

Steve

It depends on what one's definition of "native plant" is, as to whether the NAS Native Plants Database is accurate, useful, appropriate to use for one's purposes.
Organizations like the California Native Plant Society tend to limit the notion of "native plant" to mean "locally native" when discussing restorations, servicing (local) native animal species, etc. --"local"* meaning generally in the area where that particular species* of plant has evolved, adapted to the immediate surrounding conditions* and co-inhabiting organisms.
In that sense of "local", the NAS database does not serve one's ZIP Code very well at all.
* Yeah, "local", "species", "immediate surrounding conditions", are all soft, hardly objective terms. But, the general idea is that the sense of distance (remoteness, proximity), isolation, evolutionary selection in context, etc. enter into the equation of what makes a species "native".

I just found out about a new resource, set up and maintained by the National Audubon Society. It’s a Native Plants Database at http://www.audubon.org/native-plants, and anyone can just type in a zip code to get an illustrated list of bird-friendly plants that are native to that zip code. Ostensibly, many of the plants that pop up on the list (i.e., the flowering plants) would have value for pollinators too.

When I did this for my zip code (02476), I got a list of 93 species. I was happy to see many of my favorite edible native species on that list.

Anyone familiar with this tool, and, if so, what do you think of it?

I agree, Johnny. This could be such a great resource but they just do not get it.

I tested NatiVeg on an area in east-central Illinois. All cultivars, many from well outside of our area. Sure these nativars are interesting because they have atypical colors or flower forms but they do not belong in our restorations.

Interesting – I tested the NatiVeg link for a forb in my Piedmont NC area and it gave me a Helianthus species CULTIVAR introduced from the Western US. I am not impressed.

Developed by NBCI and University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture Information Technology Service and beta-tested by a variety of outside reviewers, NatiVeg is a database that, within the 25-state initiative’s range (mid-west and southeast), delivers the proper native plant choices for a specific location and the user’s specific purposes, whether wildlife, forage, biomass, pollinators, critical area planting, restoration or soil conservation.
