WHAT: Carbon Dioxide, Climate Change and the Global Harvest

WHEN: Tuesday, April 3, 2012, 5:30 ? 8:00 p.m. 
Café Scientifique events are held on the first Tuesday of each month. 

WHERE: The Front Page restaurant, near Ballston Metro.
Located at 4201 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA 22203 on the ground floor of 
the National Science Foundation (NSF) building. Parking is available under 
the NSF building or at Ballston Common Mall. 

WHO: Presented by Lewis Zizka, PhD, USDA-ARS, Crop Systems and Global 
Change

HOW: Please come early to order table service and socialize. 
Special half-price burgers start at 5:30 p.m. Presentation begins at 6:15 
p.m. followed by Q&A. No science background required ? only an interest! 
Café Scientifique is free and open to the public. Registration requested.

ABOUT THE TOPIC: The global population at present is seven billion. At 
current rates of growth, we will reach 9 billion by 2030. We have been 
adding population in large part because of what has been deemed the green 
revolution, the ability of science to grow huge amounts of food, (mostly 
cereals such as rice, wheat and corn). But the green revolution, in turn, 
is based on cheap, plentiful supplies of water (for irrigation), energy 
(for fertilizer) and a stable climate (monoculture). Dr. Zizka will 
discuss how increasing CO2 and climate change increase the vulnerability 
of the global food supply and propose some solutions that could increase 
the resiliency of global agriculture.
