Subject: National Chaparral Reserve Plan

Fellow Chaparralian,

I wanted to update you on some of my current work and announce an important plan that will be offered soon to both California state and federal governments regarding the classification and future use of the California chaparral ecosystem.

I just returned from a backpack trip into the western Sierras and learned a tremendous amount from a close friend in the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection as well as several old timers we met along the way (loggers, firefighters, pack train operators). The upcoming Chaparralian will detail what I learned and will offer some possibly surprising insights into the current condition of the western Sierra forests. Coming from a chaparral guy, you will likely find my thoughts unique. I hope to have the issue ready within a few weeks. Rumor has it, Jim Hart will make another appearance.

Secondly, I will be releasing the basic format of the National Chaparral Reserve Plan that will propose a reclassification of the four National Forests in southern California, a new management plan focusing on their dominate plant communities (chaparral systems rather than forests), and the formation of local Natural History Education Districts that will help reconnect surrounding communities to the natural communities nearby.

When you have a chance, you might want to visit our website as there are a significant number of new postings such as:

-My response to San Diego radio talk show host Roger Hedgecocks diatribe on the article I wrote about the San Diego Fire and Rescue Department at the bottom of this page:
http://www.californiachaparral.com/firepeople/firepolitics.html

-Updated information about vegetation management and fire safety around the home:
http://www.californiachaparral.com/firepeople/clearanceandprotectingyourhome.html

-Some discouraging activities in San Marcos, California where a pristine chaparral hillside and ridgeline have been carved up by a poorly planned development:

-And some interesting perspectives from people who have made their mark by diving into the wilderness in a way most of us can not:

Enjoy your summer and dont forget to schedule some time out in nature to recharge your batteries.

Take Care,

Rick Halsey
