JOB ANNOUNCEMENT - East Bay Conservation Analyst

Half Time

Background

The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) is a statewide non-profit
conservation organization founded in 1965, with some 10,000 members in 33-
chapters. The mission of CNPS is to increase understanding and
appreciation of California's native plants and to conserve them and their
natural habitats through scientific study, education, advocacy,
horticulture, and land stewardship.

The East Bay Chapter of CNPS (Alameda and Contra Costa Counties) has over
1200 members.

The Position

The East Bay Conservation Analyst will analyze the findings of the
chapter's plant science committees, plan advocacy for effective native
habitat protection and preservation in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties,
and work with volunteers to carry out the priorities set with the East Bay
Chapter Conservation Committee.

The Conservation Analyst is a ½ time position.  The East Bay Conservation
Analyst is supervised by the Executive Director (ED).  The ED and
Conservation Program Director will review or delegate review of
performance based on the job description, and will be kept informed of
activities.  The East Bay Conservation Analyst and Conservation Committee
will work as a team.  Work plans developed by the team will be submitted
to the Chapter leadership (Chapter Conservation Chair and/or Chapter
President), Conservation Program Director and the ED.

Experience and Skills

The East Bay Conservation Analyst must have the following skills and
abilities:
Background in botany and ecology sufficient to interpret plant science
data.
Familiarity with California and Federal land use and conservation planning
law and procedures.
Experience as conservation advocate.
Familiarity with CNPS policies on conservation of native plants, and data
resources such as CNPS Inventory of Rare Plants, CNDDB, CalFlora, etc.
Ability to communicate (conversation and writing) clearly and succinctly
when advocating for CNPS.
Commitment to CNPS conservation principles is essential.
Ability to attend meetings throughout the region, and statewide
conservation meetings when required.
Willingness to work with committed volunteers.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

The core of the Chapter's conservation work involves representing the
interests of the native flora to planning agencies.  This typically
involves reviewing and commenting on planning documents (EIR's, ULLs,
HCPs, etc.), attending and speaking at public meetings.  Our mission also
involves planning and coordinating with other environmental groups,
educating agency staff and other conservation activists on plant and
vegetation issues, building working relationships with such people, and
making sure they have access to CNPS generated resources (such as the
Unusual Plants List, for example).

The duties of the East Bay Conservation Analyst include the following:
Analyze scientific data accumulated by chapter and state CNPS plant
science programs for relevance to local issues.
Stay up-to-date on CNPS conservation policies, and positions the East Bay
Chapter has taken on projects and issues.
Develop working relationships with groups and agencies involved in land
use planning decision making, including raising their awareness of CNPS
planning resources.
Develop advocacy strategy and prioritize projects with Conservation
Committee.
Work with the conservation committee (which includes chairs of the various
plant science committees) to develop a specific workplan and budget for
each project identified in d.
Brief CNPS representatives (volunteers, consultants, or other staff)
assigned tasks within the workplans so that representation is consistent.
Assure that all relevant meetings are covered either in person, or by
another CNPS representative who has been briefed on the project, issues,
availability of scientific data, etc.
Lead EBCNPS' review and comment on environmental planning documents; work
with chapter officers on submitting comments.
Prepare necessary internal reports to chapter, state office, CNPS
Executive Director. (May use Conservation Committee Chair to help with
these).

Pertaining to the above duties, the following work is required of the East
Bay Conservation Analyst:  use of phone and e-mail for communication;
occasional hiking; driving to meetings and conservation field trips;
attendance at daytime, evening, and occasional weekend meetings; use of
library, online and other  materials for research.

Additional Job Requirements
Work hours will fluctuate depending on meeting schedules, availability of
plant science volunteers to be interviewed, etc., but must average 20
hours per week.
Work location is within Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.  Home and car
office work is anticipated.  Attendance at Conservation Committee meetings
and Chapter Board Meetings may be requested (Wednesday evenings).
A valid California driver’s license and proof of car insurance are
required, provided annually.
Reference checks will be conducted for candidates selected for interviews.

Compensation

The compensation for the Conservation Analyst is $20,000 a year, paychecks
are issued twice per month.  A typical work week would total 20 hours.
Administration of payment and benefits is the responsibility of the state
CNPS office.

It is anticipated that a cell phone account and computer equipment will be
provided by the chapter.

Benefits are negotiable.  The duration of the position is subject to
funding availability; a minimum of five months is currently funded.  A
fundraising program for additional grants and donations is underway.
