Hi all,

Attached is a job posting for a new Director for Limahuli Garden and
Preserve. Since I have accepted the CEO position at NTBG effective
1/1/2005, we will need to fill this important position. Limahuli has
some amazing ex situ and in situ collections of rare native plants and
finding the right person who can bridge the important cultural aspects
of the project with the unique biological challenges is essential to our
future success at Limahuli. Please encourage your colleagues to apply
if you feel they are qualified and want to live on Kaua`i.

In case the attachment is hard to open I have included the text of the
job posting below. Mahalo, Chipper

National Tropical Botanical Garden
Director of Limahuli Garden & Preserve

The National Tropical Botanical Garden, under its Congressional charter,
administers gardens of extraordinary beauty and historical significance,
advancing scientific research, public education, and plant conservation.
This work is carried out at five gardens and three preserves in Hawaii
and Florida. The NTBG is seeking a Director to manage all aspects of
operations at Limahuli Garden and Preserve. This 1,000 acre property,
located in the northshore community of Ha'ena, Kauai, contains
significant Hawaiian cultural and archaeological sites. The preserve
encompasses three ecological zones with natural populations of rare and
endangered plant species and is the centerpiece of restoration ecology
programs. A hallmark of this award-winning garden has been developing
scientific collections of Hawaiian ethnobotanical and native plants in
the context of an Hawaiian ahupua'a system.

Qualifications: Bachelors degree (Masters preferred) in Horticulture,
Botany, Ethnobotany, or Botanical Garden Management. A minimum of five
years practical experience in horticulture, botany or management of a
botanical garden is preferred. Knowledge of tropical plants, especially
Hawaiian species, and restoration ecology practices, is an asset.
Experience working with Hawaiian cultural practitioners, and a
familiarity with the Hawaiian language and ahupua'a concept is
preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills, managerial
experience, computer competence, and successful grant writing are
required. Must be able to work collaboratively with a multicultural
staff, community, cultural experts, and a multidisciplinary team of
scientists, educators, and conservationists.
