A conference that may be of interest to some of you...At least one member
of MPWG will be presenting (Dr. C. Prakash Kala) and another will be
facilitating sessions and leading side events (Eric Burkhart). Wade Davis
will give a concluding address. I understand the proceedings will be
available on the web sometime this Fall. If anyone who attends this
Conference would like to send out a summary over our listserve, please let
me know.

The following is an excerpt from the webpage

       Linking global and local knowledge
systems to transform the academy will
be the overarching theme of this
       conference. Sponsored by the

       Indigenous Knowledge (ICIK) and
       partners, the conference will bring
       together scholars, educators, and
       practitioners from universities,
       colleges, and other institutions and
organizations in the United States and
       beyond.

       The conference participants will
explore ways of knowing that have
       developed over time in communities
around the world that enable people to
interact with each other and with
       their natural environment. Through
this conference we hope to initiate
       and promote participatory research
       activities and practices through which
       local communities can engage with
academics in studies that enhance the
       involvement of citizens in informing
the decisions that affect their lives.
       Scholars associated with ICIK and
       other indigenous knowledge centers
worldwide are conscious that, in the
       face of intense globalization, the
       world's indigenous knowledge base is
as threatened as its plant and animal
       species.

We believe that it is no less
important for the academy to be
       involved in the preservation and
       protection of traditional knowledge
and ways of knowing than it is for
       that institution to concern itself
       with the maintenance of biological
       diversity. This conference will
       highlight ICIK's ongoing efforts to
bring the community and the academy
       into meaningful and productive
       relationships through which the
knowledge systems of each partner are
       valued.
