JOB TITLE: POTOMAC GORGE HABITAT RESTORATION ASSISTANT
SUPERVISOR: Potomac Gorge Habitat Restoration Manager
LOCATION: Bethesda, MD
JOB TYPE: One-Year Position
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Potomac Gorge Habitat Restoration Assistant will work to address invasive non-native plant species and recreational use impacts on rare species and natural communities at The Nature Conservancy’s Potomac Gorge cooperative conservation area, the fifteen-mile river corridor from Great Falls to Key Bridge along the Potomac River, just outside Washington, D.C. The Potomac Gorge has an exceptional diversity and concentration of rare species, with more than 200 recorded state and globally rare plant species and ten globally rare plant communities. Public parklands in the Gorge are extremely popular for recreational use, visited by more than two million people per year.
The Potomac Gorge Habitat Restoration Assistant will help implement conservation strategies involving both on-the-ground habitat restoration and public education and outreach. This position will be supervised by The Nature Conservancy out of the Bethesda, MD office. S/he will spend most of the time in the field working on public lands and in partnership with the National Park Service’s Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park and George Washington Memorial Parkway, Fairfax and Arlington Counties, VA, and Montgomery County, MD.
The primary focus of the position will be monitoring and controlling invasive plant species on Nature Conservancy, National Park Service, and county park lands in the Potomac Gorge. Invasive non-native species that we are targeting in our habitat restoration efforts include garlic mustard, Japanese stilt grass, Amur honeysuckle, Asiatic bittersweet, porcelain berry, and English ivy. The Assistant will work independently and with team members on invasive species control, and will plan and supervise volunteer workdays to control invasive plants. S/he will also help educate the public on invasive species prevention and control issues, and benefits of native species.
The secondary focus of the position will be to address recreational use impacts on rare species and natural communities, both through trail restoration and public education and outreach. Education and outreach activities in both sensitive recreational use and invasive species issues will include developing educational messages, writing, and graphic design of brochures and other print and web materials, as well as developing and offering public presentations, including Power point slide shows.
