I would very much appreciate it if you would add the following 2004
conference to your calendar of upcoming events or distribute to those
involved in aquatic invasive species issues. The conference is being
co-sponsored by the US Coast Guard, US Fish & Wildlife Service, National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and US Army Corps of Engineers,
the Institute of Technology, Sligo and the Marine Institute of Ireland.

13th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species
Hosted by the Institute of Technology, Sligo, Ireland
November 19-23, 2004
Lynch West County Hotel and Conference Centre, Ennis, County Clare,
Ireland

The introduction and spread of non-native species in freshwater and marine
environments is a worldwide problem that is increasing in frequency. There
are numerous alien invertebrate, fish, and plant species that are being
introduced through various pathways, and many are causing significant
damage to coastal and freshwater ecosystems, and to the economies that
depend upon them. It is becoming increasingly important to foster
international cooperation on the invasive species issues through exchange
of scientific information and techniques for control and mitigation,
coordinated data management, monitoring, and developing new approaches to
rapid response in dealing with new introductions.

The International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species is widely
considered to be the most comprehensive international forum for the review
of accumulated scientific knowledge; presentation of the latest field
research; introduction of new technologies or advancements in prevention,
monitoring and control; discussion of policy and legislation and how to
raise political awareness of the issues; and public education and outreach
initiatives to help prevent new introductions.
