Invasive Species Management at the NEWSS Meeting

The Northeastern Weed Science Society (NEWSS) will have its annual
meeting January 5-8, 2004 at the Cambridge Marriott, Cambridge, MA.
Invasive plant species will be an important part of the annual
meeting. One special workshop will address the biology, ecology,
control strategies, organizational models for eradication, and
grass-roots management programs for Japanese stiltgrass (Microstegium
vimineum). Microstegium is an aggressive, invasive species that is
widely-distributed in the Mid-Atlantic States and is spreading in New
England. The workshop will be held Tuesday afternoon, January 6,
2004 from 3:15 until 6:00 pm, with a social mixer to follow.
There will be no additional registration fee for NEWSS members. We
will be offering a special one-day registration fee for non-members
attending only this session. A registration form for the
Microstegium workshop or the entire NEWSS meeting is attached. We
hope you will be able to participate in this workshop.

There will be breakout sessions on weed management in agronomic
crops, vegetables and fruit, turf, ornamentals,
conservation/industrial/forestry, and weed biology and ecology.
Other papers and posters relating to invasive species to be presented
during the meeting include:
* Current status and significance of giant hogweed, * Japanese
knotweed control with selected post herbicides, * The effect of site
heterogeneity and disturbance on the establishment of Microstegium
vimineum, * Tree-of-heaven control in no-tillage crops, *
Effectiveness of selected herbicides for control of garlic mustard, *
Effect of cut surface application timing on suppression of
tree-of-heaven, * Herbicides for control of tree-of-heaven using cut
surface applications, * Incorporation of ecological principles into
weed management, * Developments in biological weed control, * Biology
of Japanese knotweed, * Biology of the invasive plant pale swallowwort
