Howdy SOS teams!
We had a great March call. Teams are in all stages of activity right now, some are scouting, some collecting, and some just waiting for snow to melt and spring to arrive! Below you will find the highlights of the meeting. Our next call will be April 4th. We will be going over some protocol updates, so please plan on attending (which I know you were going to do anyway 🙂).
National Office Updates
General SOS
* These monthly calls will always be the first Tuesday of the month, on Microsoft Teams. If you can’t be at a computer for a call, there will be an audio call in number associated with the teams invite.
* At least one team member should be attending the calls every month if possible. If you aren’t completely hired on yet, or haven’t started yet, you don’t need to come, but please keep me informed of any updates. Similarly, once you are done for the season, you don’t need to keep attending, although you are more than welcome to stick around.
* New virtual training dates - April 26/27, email Sarah Hill at sehill at blm.gov to be added to the roster. Additional training dates are TBD later in the spring. If you have training needs please let Sarah know ASAP
* All of these trainings are invite only – they are really meant for active collectors and mentors, so please do not share the invitation with anyone outside of your collecting team.
*
* Some people are having trouble receiving messages sent out on the SOS listerv. Please check your junk folder, and mark anything from the listerv as not junk. We don’t have a better solution right now!
* This is the first interagency SOS meeting! This year, SOS is officially expanding to include nationwide partnerships with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Parks Service! The SOS monthly calls will now serve as a space for all agency SOS teams to connect, and the call format will be a little different. We will begin each call with national level announcements that apply to all SOS teams. Then folks will be assigned breakout rooms with their specific agency, which is where each coordinator will discuss the status of each team / attend to agency specific business. The BLM National office / Sarah will remain the point of contact for BLM SOS teams. Kelly Thomas, Kelly_Thomas at fws.gov, will coordinate USFWS teams, and Katie Vinzant, katharine_vinzant at nps.gov will be coordinating things for the NPS.
GIS Announcements - Kristy Snyder, ksnyder at blm.gov
* If you have used GPLAT in the past, please email me the usernames of those you would like added to the 2023 GPLAT groups and the groups they should be added to.
* If you do not have GPLAT accounts yet and are planning on using the digital data collection, please email myself and Sarah for instructions
* Rescouting a point takes a point at the device location, do not rescout in the office!!
* Let me know of any glitches or suggested improvements to the digital data collection, we are always open to constructive feedback
Partners
* Sarah Garvin/Bend Seed Extractory
* Only have 90 collections left to process, pack, and process!
* Looking forward to the upcoming season
* Erika Gardner/Smithsonian
* Follow the protocol for collecting and shipping voucher specimens! The vouchers shouldn’t be mounted, no tape/staples/glue etc. Just the plants, pressed. When in doubt, follow the guide on the SOS website.
BLM Specific Notes
* There was a question about the minimum lot size that could be requested back from Bend.
* Any size lots over the 3,000 seeds that are put into curation and long-term storage can be requested. If you are not the original collecting team, work with the National Office to submit a seed order form and get appropriate seed release information.
FWS Specific Notes
* Newly hired technicians or "leads" working with collecting teams that have not yet taken the SOS national training can do so on April 26th and 27th. Email Kelly_Thomas at fws.gov to register for training and cc during correspondence on project.
* Kelly will work with project officers to ensure regional-specific training needs are covered.
* Please send FWS target species lists and finalized collection estimates to Kelly by April 15th, to be submitted to the SOS National Office by the end of April.
* Kelly is working on getting each team a "packet" of FWS specific protocol and forms (most will also be placed on BLM SOS website).
NPS will be joining in April!
For the seeds,
Sarah
