Hi folks,
Thanks to everyone who was able to join our November SOS call. Our next call will be December 6th.
Below are the call notes:
* New SOS Curator! We were joined by new National SOS Curator, Sarah Hill. Though she grew up exploring forests and oak prairies west of the Cascade Range, Sarah's curiosity, love of learning, and passion for conservation led her to immerse herself in various ecoregions around the world. Sarah holds a BS in Life Science from the University of Portland, and a MS in Biology from Eastern Washington University, where she studied Palouse Prairie restoration while building EWU's native plant propagation and seed collection program. She has worked for many non-profits and federal agencies alike as a naturalist and backcountry guide, bushcraft skills and arts instructor, indigenous cultural programs director, native seed collector (including SOS collecting!), nursery manager, and botanist. Regardless of her job description, she is motivated to connect people to the landscapes they live in, and champions native plant restoration and conservation wherever she goes.
* Welcome, Sarah!! Sarah will have a BLM email soon, but for now you can reach her at shill at chicagobotanic.org
*
* Everything is due December 15th! All data should be entered, and all annual reports, photos, and data forms should be emailed to Sarah or me by December 15th.
* Additionally, all seed should be shipped to Bend by December 15th. When you have shipped your last collections, please send Bend and Sarah Hill an email. A reminder that Kayla is no longer at Bend, so please email SM.FS.BSEOrders at usda.gov for general shipping and seed order questions; and contact Sarah Garvin, Assistant Manager at sarah.garvin at usda.gov for any specific seed status questions. If you have not done so PLEASE READ last month's notes with details about Bend's capacity and follow that guidance.
* Clearance Forms - Cleaned seeds will remain at Bend until requested back by the original collector via Clearance Form or Seed Order Form. Please use the Clearance Forms to request back seeds from this season and the Seed Order form to request seeds from previous seasons.
* 2023 Training and Crews - Many folks have asked about training for next year. Now that Sarah Hill is onboard, we will be sending out information about training dates over this listserv. So stay tuned! If you are planning on collecting next year and have not attended a SOS monthly call recently to tell me so, please send me or Sarah Hill an email. Knowing when and where folks will be starting will help us plan training locations and dates. Additionally, please let us know whether or not you would like to continue using paper data forms to collect data, or switch to using tablets/ipads.
Finally, thank you again for a great season! I'm passing the baton to Sarah, but I'm so glad I will still get to interact with many of you and continue to work on behalf of plant conservation. My email will stay the same if anyone ever needs anything (alindquist at blm.gov)
Thanks and take care,
Anna
