Hi everyone,
Our next call will be Tuesday, April 6th. We will continue to use Microsoft Teams as our platform, but I will be sending out a new meeting series invitation to remove people from last year who are no longer collecting.
Here are the highlights from our monthly call today:
* Collector Codes and Web Portal Logins: 2021 SOS web portal logins will all be sent out by Friday. If you do not receive an email from me, please let me know. It may be that we need to discuss your collector code. If you do not know your collector code for 2021, please email me!
* Target Species Lists: Due April 30th. A template for target species lists is available on the website: blm.gov/sos. There is a lot of effort that goes into actively curating every SOS collection. Proper planning, such as creating target species lists, ensures we are managing our resources and time well.
* *Species Exclusions*: We will be updating the protocol to exclude "intermediate" or "sub-orthodox" seeds from SOS collection this year. You will now see the following genera on the exclusions list: Populus, Salix, and Ulmus. If you would like more information on "intermediate" seeds, visit: https://saveplants.org/best-practices/difference-between-orthodox-intermediate-and-recalcitrant-seed/ . I highly recommend the video of Dr. Chris Walters presentation found towards the bottom.
* Trainings: The Great Basin specific training will be April 13th, 14th, and 15th. Email jkindred at blm.gov for more information. The national training will be April 29th and 30th. Email me - alindquist at blm.gov - for more information. I will send out more details when they are finalized. Everyone is encouraged to attend these virtual trainings!
* Bend Seed Extractory update: Bend is getting close to finishing 2020 seed cleaning! To ensure another successful season, please continue to communicate with Kayla, which includes emailing her when you send your first and last seed collections. Remember to never ship on or right before the weekend. More updates about Bend's capacity will be provided on these monthly calls.
* Smithsonian update: The Smithsonian is now in phase 2, but collection staff are still not allowed in the building, so continue to hold onto your 2020 vouchers. If you can no longer store your vouchers at your office, please email Anna.
Thanks to everyone who joined the call today! Be on the lookout for the new Teams invite. Additionally, if there are any topics you would like to see covered on a future call, please let me know.
Next month we will review the seed collecting guidelines.
Happy almost spring!
Best,
Anna
