July 2018 SOS Call Notes:

There were 9 collecting teams on this call.

   - I’m still missing priority species lists from several teams, PLEASE
send this to me as well as estimated number of collections.
   - Location details - should describe the driving and hiking directions
to get back to the collection site. Please provide detailed enough
information so that someone could return to the site without GPS
   coordinates.
   - Five things to include in descriptions:

1. Set the scene – a landmark point of reference (i.e. nearest town)
2. Cardinal directions (avoid left/right unless you accompany it with N/S,
etc.)
3. Road names (if you’re driving on a state road for example, it’s also
helpful to include any other name the road might have i.e. Route 64 might
also be called Mendon Road)
4. Mileage (use the trip feature on your car to get precise mileages
between turns, or retrace your route in google maps but be accurate)
5. Directions to population (often folks stop their directions at where
they parked the car but please include hiking/walking directions to the
population itself)

   - Associated species – Please list the scientific name for at least 5-10
of the most dominant species at your site. More species are always
appreciated. These can include native as well as non-native species. This
list does not need to be a complete flora, but should help provide a
snapshot of the plant community during the year of collection.
   - Field notes to assist in identification of pressed specimen – this
field should include observed field notes only. There is no need to include
a description form a flora or Wikipedia. Appropriate notes include flower
color, smell, or any other distinguishing feature that helped you determine
the ID of the plant or features that may otherwise not be seed in your
pressed specimen. This is also a field where you can include any other
important information about your population. i.e. if you use a newer flora
that keys to a subspecies not recognized by USDA plants, you can list the
full plant name that you keyed to in this box.
   - Written permission is required for every SOS collection. Teams
collecting on BLM land do not need a permit if following the SOS protocol.
If you are collecting on any other Federal, State, County or private land,
please be sure to obtain written permission and carry permits with you at
   all times.
   - Soil texture/color – Soil information is particularly important when
thinking about where to put collections back on the ground. Soil texturing
should be done while the soil is moist, some teams also do dry just be
clear and consistent on your data sheet if you do both. See soil texturing
flow chart on the SOS website. WebSoilSurvey and the Cal Soil Resource lab
are great resources for determining soil and geology information.
   - Please take clear photos. These are often used at the National Office
for press releases, handouts, on our website and social media pages. These
are helpful in getting the public engaged and familiar with more native
   plants.
   - Clearance Forms: If you are leveraging SOS collections to make larger
collections for research or grow out, please fill out a clearance form and
submit it to Leah Prescott. A copy of the clearance form is available on
the SOS website. Please allow at least 30 days for Bend to process the
order, provide the FedEx shipping code, and a short description of the
intended use of the material. We will process these requests as quickly as
possible but please note, there may be others requesting seed at a similar
deadline as yours. If there is no rush to have seed returned to you, please
indicate so on the form. You can put “no rush” in as the request by date.
Please wait to send the national office a clearance form until you have
shipped seed to Bend. Also, please consolidate clearance forms as best as
possible. Clearance forms for seed collected during the 2018 season must be
turned in by January 30th 2019.

***Please note – new in 2018 – clearance forms need to be filled out if you
need your test results or other information back for reporting or planning
purposes. Many teams will want their test results back as soon as possible
for planning, so these will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, as
priority will be given to those requesting actual seed back for projects.
Please indicate in the “what the material will be used for” section whether
you want seed or data back and what it will be used for.***

The next SOS Collectors Call with be Tuesday, August 7th at 12:00PM EDT.
Please email me (lprescott at blm.gov) if you need the call in number.

Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Thanks!
