*SOS Collectors' Call *

*January 3, 2017*

There were 17 participants on the call.

*Reassess Collection Goals for 2017*

Collecting for diversity means filling in the gaps of species and
geographic areas to add new genetic resources to the SOS National
Collection. Collecting for operational projects like restoration and
rehabilitation is also congruous with SOS as long the collections are large
enough to support the 10,000 seed contribution. If seed collections do not
have a portion contributed to the SOS National Collection, collections data
should not be submitted to SOS.

Spring is the time to create and revise species target lists. Do not forget
about national priorities including plants to benefit pollinators, sage
grouse, or support other wildlife. Species to support restoration and
recovery from fire, flood, and other disturbance may also be appropriate
collection targets.* Please submit those lists, along with collection total
estimates to the SOS National Collection Curator prior to beginning the
collection season.*

*National Native Seed Conference*, Washington, DC, February 13-16, 2017.
There will be two session that may be of particular interest to SOS
partners. A session by Mike O’Neal, BG-BASE developer on the new online
data entry portal application and its utility for SOS and beyond; and a
session on Seed Networks that will provide ecoregional examples or

*Final Thoughts *

It has been a pleasure working with all of you over the last 6+ years. I
have accepted a permanent position with the National Institute of Food and
Agriculture working in their division of plant protection and this is my
last week in the office. Seeds of Success is a special program; with BLMs
leadership and the dedication and energy from all partners, we have
developed one of the largest native seed collection programs in the world.
Keep up the good work and thanks for letting me participate in such a fun,
positive and proactive venture! Cheers, Megan

Until a permanent replacement is selected, please contact Lindsey Riibe (
