SOS Collectors' Call, November 1, 2016
End of Season Wrap Up
All *data sheets, clearance forms, photos and annual reports* must be
submitted to mahaidet at blm.gov.
- Scanned or typed versions of data and clearance forms may be
sent via email.
- Photos can be sent via email, google drive (BLM only), or hard
copy (cd)
- Annual reports are due by December 15. If you are not finished
with collecting or final wrap up by Dec. 15, please contact me.
All BLM collection teams send *seed and data sheets* to Bend Seed
Extractory. Its ideal to ship seed Mon-Wed so that someone is at the
Extractory when it arrives. They will not be at the Extractory on 11/11,
11/24-25, 12/25-26. In general, holidays shouldn’t interrupt seed shipment
- Bend sheds staff over the winter, if seed does not arrive by
Dec. 1, they likely can’t garauntee that seed will be clean before April.
- 865 collections received by Bend so far
*Herbarium specimens *should be sent to Smithsonian, with labels and
transmittal notices. Voucher specimens do not need to be mounted.
End of year wrap up: Please leave SOS records in good order at the end of
the season. Be sure future collectors have access to your field notes,
electronic files and know when to begin numbering their 2017 collections.
Data Entry Portal: Thanks to everyone that attended trainings. You should
have your login & passwords. There is an expectation that teams enter their
2016 data if at all possible. Please let mahaidet at blm.gov know when you
have finished entering data for the season. Also contact me immediately if
you encounter any issues with the portal. The web address and support
documentation will be on the BLM website soon.
Training: *Seed Collection for Conservation and Restoration (Seeds of
Success 1730-06)*, *May 16-17, Boise ID *(with an optional field trip
on Thursday
5/18 to the OSU Malheur Experimental Station in Ontario, OR) This 2 day
course will provide a history of the Native Plant Materials Development
Program (NPMDP) and teach the Seeds of Success (SOS) protocol for
collection, shipping, and storage of native wildland seed collections.
Material covered includes the development of a targeted species list, seed
sampling strategies, field preparedness, a native plant taxonomy
review, evaluating seed ripeness, collecting voucher specimens,
post-collection seed care and restoration and rehabilitation concepts. A
field component will reinforce classroom discussion topics. You may sign
up for the course via DOI Learn (http://www.doi.gov/doilearn/index.cfm). If
you have any questions or difficulty signing up, please contact training
coordinator Lori Young (602-906-5640, lyoung at blm.gov).
