Care of the Earth: A Visit with a Seed Collector

Last week, Seed Librarians and VPA staff were treated to a fascinating talk
by Dustin Wolkis, a Desert Botanical Garden research assistant and ASU
biology graduate student. Dustin spoke about his work with Seeds of
Success, the national native seed collection program coordinated by the Bureau
of Land Management<http://vpaaz.wildapricot.org/EmailTracker/LinkTracker.ashx?linkAndRecipientCode=cUJtOr9mNZ5%2f9GEIvsCz%2bAI%2b%2bdbkhernLLWP2JW4fib2sKwETwd5oTBsvEinwLS2ipuw6fkb0NvSkWRzfnS3eiW3mwYr8GyEMgYX0hlXW1Y%3d>.
The
seeds are collected to aid in rehabilitation, restoration and stabilization
projects. They are also part of a national collection of seeds that are
used for current study and also stored for future needs. To learn more
about this program visit
http://www.nps.gov/plants/sos/<http://vpaaz.wildapricot.org/EmailTracker/LinkTracker.ashx?linkAndRecipientCode=vFMK95ReQM1C2vKsPmNmDuvv6dEOMXW%2fazYiPOSfIWBc7xmIawkOJFQ4dTjS3v%2f8KAJsMwZj%2fbwo3sDQWM5YGnOkA3FpUqoHnmDN1ZgEv3g%3d>

Dustin shared some great resource links including:
SEINet<http://vpaaz.wildapricot.org/EmailTracker/LinkTracker.ashx?linkAndRecipientCode=hYEBw1yIRA%2bPRu7n2Q9q0oCNMMGiULoy%2bggsTU48q8YAGAQuCyhvwjwqWrE1ogYoi6yabl2StiPgksrBggHtD4NBtafrWPMUoKciRKqhnt0%3d>,
(Southwest Environmental Information Network), which is a searchable
database of georeferenced plant collections. It includes both native and
non-native species. The site is a little technical, but with a little
practice you will soon find yourself creating a plant spotting list to take
on your next family hike.

We hope to have the opportunity to visit Dustin at work and school to see
the Desert Botanical Garden native plants research facility and the ASU
herbarium. If you are interested in becoming a Seed Librarian and having
the opportunity to share in this type of learning event, please visit the Seed

How to Plant a Bare-Root Fruit Tree

Now is the time to plant bare-root fruit trees, grapevines and berry
bushes! Remember to get your bare root tree planted within 24-48 hours of
bringing it home. Soaking it in a bucket of water for an hour before
planting will keep it from drying out.
