SOS Monthly Conference Call

March 6, 2012

There were 20 participants on the call.

Agenda items:
New mentors/interns/contractors

-          Everyone participating in SOS must be familiar with Protocol

-          The Protocol includes revised contact information for collection teams

-          The Protocol can be found on the SOS website: (http://www.nps.gov/plants/sos/protocol/index.htm)

Data Form Update

-          Data form be revised for 2012 collection season

-          Revised form will be posted on the SOS website and sent over the SOS list

-          SOS National Office will send notice as to when new data form is available online

Guidance documents

-          Numerous guidance documents can be found on the SOS website, under the Forms and Training tab (http://www.nps.gov/plants/sos/training/index.htm)

-          Please review these at the beginning of each collection season

-          Feel free to notify the National Office if you feel that something could be added to the list or if there is a need for additional clarification

-          An example letter requesting permission to collect seed will be developed and posted on the SOS website this spring

Priority species for collection

-          Prior to the start of each collection season, all mentors should send targeted species lists to the SOS National Office

ARRA Grant Summary

-          In 2010, BLM awarded Chicago Botanic Garden (CBG) an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant to hire and place interns in western states to conduct seed collection

-          Over a 16 month period, CBG hired and placed 54 interns in 10 states

-          These interns were expected to carry out 1000 seed collections

-          ARRA funded interns exceeded expectations by collecting 2127 accessions of 1081 species

Bend Update

-          1527 collections were received in 2011, these collections are 60% cleaned

-          New agreement is in the pipeline between Bend and BLM

-          Any grass or grass-like species should contain "no pest strips

-          Paper bags work much better than cloth bags, lost of seed can be lost by sticking to cloth bags
