SOS Call Notes from April 3, 2012
Mentors/Interns/Contractors
- Refresh your understanding of SOS for 2012
- All must be familiar with Protocol
- Understand minimum seed collection quantities (at least 10,000, sampled from 50+ plants, while not sampling more than 20% of the viable seed on the day of collection)
- Familiarize with the "how-to" documents on the SOS Website
Revised Data Form
- Please use the new datasheet for all 2012 collections
- NOTE: date has changed to the American format (MM/DD/YY)
- Location details should provide specific driving directions from office/town/known site to collection site
- Associated species should list scientific names, not common names
- Include data regarding herbarium specimens, when applicable
- Include species identification information on all datasheets
SOS Training Courses
Seed Collection for Conservation and Restoration, April 24-26, 2012, Las Vegas, NV
- Primarily for BLM mentors beginning new seed collection programs
- If you are registered, you should have received all information from Lori Young
Seed Collection for Conservation and Restoration, June 18-22, 2012, Chicago, IL
- For Chicago Botanic Garden Conservation & Land Management Interns
Priority Species for Collection
- Largely up to the field office to determine, though target species lists must be sent to National Office early in collection season
- Consider local restoration and rehabilitation priorities, wildlife obligate species (sage grouse, etc.), pollinator species, forbs
- Send target species list and estimated number of collections to the SOS National Office
Bend Update:
- Still on schedule for the completing processing be end of April/beginning of May
- 100% complete (processing, testing, packaging, shipped):
o AZ, CP1, ID, MT, NM, RMRS, WY
- Partially complete
o CA = 22%, CO = 98%, NV = 15%, OR = 43%, UT = 64%
