SOS Collectors Call Notes
June 7, 2011

31 people were on the line for the SOS call

Please send your office’s 2011 targeted species list to mahaidet at blm.gov at
your earliest convenience.

Important Protocol Reminders
· One collection shall consist of a minimum of 10,000 seed.
· These collections shall be done in a sustainable manner: do not
collect more than 20% of mature seed.
· These collections shall be made to maximize genetic diversity:
collect from at least 50 individuals.
· The greater goal of SOS is to collect from at least 20 populations
across the range of a species.
· If you would like seed returned to your office at the end of the
collection season, please collect more than 10,000 so there is seed
available for your local native plant materials development project.
You may request this seed back using the SOS Clearance Form.
· If you are collecting from one population on multiple dates within
the same collection year that shall be considered one collection (using the
same data sheet and seed collection reference number).
· If you are collecting from one population in two separate years, that
shall be two separate collections (using different data sheets and seed
collection reference numbers).

Herbarium vouchers
· Need to develop a protocol for how to deal with multiple vouchers
samples that are made from the same area.
· The National Coordinating Office will send out guidance on this once
it has been developed.
