Position:
Assistant Curator – Seed Plants
Description:
Seed Savers Exchange is seeking a highly motivated individual to assist in
the maintenance of a germplasm collection of over 25,000 rare and unique
vegetable and fruit varieties. The Assistant Curator – Seed Plants will be
responsible for performing and coordinating a wide range of technical and
curatorial projects in support of germplasm maintenance. Over 80 different
types of plants are grown for seed production or maintained vegetativly at
Heritage Farm.
Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will require involvement in all activities that follow the
seed through storage to regeneration and back to storage again. Some of
these responsibilities include: data management, cataloging and
inventorying, characterization and imaging, verification of taxonomy,
quality control, varietial research, seed distribution and other curatorial
work. Additional responsibilities will include: coordinating greenhouse
operations, planting and harvesting, conditioning and testing seed,
processing and packaging seed, plant monitoring, and coordinating
controlled pollinations.
Qualifications:
There is a minimum educational requirement of a Bachelor’s Degree in
biology or horticulture with an emphasis in plant biology. At least 3 years
of post-academic experience with plants is expected. Experience with
databases and biological data collection is required.
Applicants must:
• posses excellent computer skills, including a proficiency with Microsoft
Excel, Access, and Word
• have excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills
• be able to perform detailed and complex tasks with accuracy and
efficiency
• be able to work well in a fast-paced environment with changing day to day
needs
• be reliable, responsible and able to work independently and as part of a
team
• be prepared to continually learn and adapt to new practices and
methodologies
• have exceptional attention to detail for working with data collection,
organization and manipulation
• have the ability to coordinate and track the needs of thousands of
accessions at various stages during regeneration and storage
• have familiarity with seed saving or germplasm management
• understand vegetable culture and taxonomy
• understand concepts of plant physiology and pathology
be prepared to work in all types of outdoor conditions (around 50% of work
hours can be expected to be in the field)
• be able to occasionally spend extended periods of time in dusty or
subzero conditions
• be able to lift (up to 100 lbs. assisted); carrying (50 lbs.)
• be able to perform bending, climbing, pushing, and pulling
• have a valid driver’s license
