Duration: 1 hour

What will you learn?
Fire is a natural part of many ecosystems. But on a planet rapidly changing due to climate change, habitat destruction, and resource extraction, fire is becoming an increasing threat to nature and human communities alike. Just as human-caused changes have made fire a danger in many places, human ingenuity has the power to reimagine and remember how we, and the creatures we share Earth with, can live and thrive with fire.

Conservation X Labs (CXL) is a non-profit organization that uses technology and innovation to create and scale solutions to stop the extinction crisis. In its 10 year history, it has supported 165 solutions in 69 different countries, which have gone on to raise over $550 million in follow-on funding. With the support of the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation, The Coca-Cola Foundation, Esri, and Planet Labs, CXL is currently running the Fire Grand Challenge, an open innovation initiative that is accelerating and scaling new solutions to destructive fire that braid together Indigenous, rural, and place-based knowledge with cutting-edge technology.

The Fire Grand Challenge is a global call to innovators from around the globe to submit solutions to transform how we manage and live with fire in Western North America. This spring a cohort of 12 innovators were selected to receive financial and technical support. We’re thrilled to introduce you to the challenge and some of the innovators who are changing how we think about fire in North America.

Presenters: The session will feature speakers from the Conservation X Labs team, and the WEF, and will explore how innovators are scaling solutions that integrate Indigenous, rural, and place-based knowledge with emerging technologies to transform fire management across Western North America.
