Location: Social Circle, Georgia

Job Description: We are seeking a Botanist with strong field taxonomy skills to serve in a Wildlife Biologist 2 position for the Wildlife Conservation Section (WCS). The Wildlife Biologist 2 will work with a team of botanists on conservation of rare plant species and habitats prioritized in Georgia’s State Wildlife Action Plan.

This position's primary duty is management of Natural Heritage data. This includes implementing survey and population trends monitoring of priority rare plant species, supervising rare plant data management, maintaining the list of tracked rare Georgia flora, and assessing species’ state conservation ranks. Other important responsibilities are inventory of species on conservation lands, environmental review of projects impacting rare plants and habitats, managing the Georgia Ginseng Program, and coordinating high priority conservation actions to meet requirements for federal grants. The Wildlife Biologist 2 will also contribute to outreach programs and provide technical information to the general public and conservation partners.

Through development of  a comprehensive database of Georgia’s flora, the Wildlife Biologist 2 will advise the WCS botany team and the Georgia Plant Conservation Alliance on plant conservation priorities. Strong workplace organizational skills are necessary to meet the demand for information on Georgia’s diverse rare plants and habitats, and to receive and manage data from individuals and partners. Teamwork is critical for success, and effective written and verbal communication are required.

Minimum Qualifications:  Master’s degree in Biology or a related field from an accredited college or university OR Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field from an accredited college or university AND one year of related experience OR one year of experience required at the lower level Wildlife Biologist 1 (NRP060) or position equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:  Preference may be given to applicants with:

1. Training and proficiency in plant taxonomy and systematics, familiarity with the flora and habitats of the Southeastern U.S.
2. Proficiency in surveys and monitoring for rare plants and natural communities.
3. Coursework or experience in principals of plant conservation ecology, conservation genetics, pollination ecology, population ecology, and disturbance ecology.
4. Experience with management of large amounts of data, including rare species, GIS, and NatureServe Biotics data.
5. Knowledge of conservation techniques for rare plants and habitats including prescribed fire, herbicide application, and ex- and in-situ population conservation.
6. GA DNR/Wildlife Resources Division employment experience.
