Take part in a global review of IPAs

A Global Review of the Important Plant Areas Methodology

A new research project is underway to review and evaluate the IPA methodology as it has been applied to date, the approaches used by different countries and their conservation outcomes. Since its launch in 2002, the IPA approach has been applied in 50 countries and continues to be seen as a major contribution to plant conservation, yet a systematic global review of experiences and outcomes has yet to be undertaken.

Plantlife is collaborating with Laura Kor<https://www.kcl.ac.uk/people/laura-kor>, a PhD student at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The research will answer the following questions:

  1. What methods have been applied to, and results gained from, IPA identification?
  2. To what extent have IPAs involved useful plants and how has this been approached?
  3. To what extent has IPA identification led to plant conservation action and outcomes?
  4. How is the IPA approach perceived by plant conservation practitioners and researchers?

Data collection will be based on an extensive literature review, semi-structured interviews, and participatory workshops. We hope to engage with many members of Global IPA Network in our interviews and workshops, so please keep an eye out for this over the next few months. In the meantime, do get in touch<mailto:l.kor at kew.org;%20fiona.perez at plantlife.org.uk?subject=IPA%20Review> if you have any questions, suggestions, or to express interest in getting involved!
