Saguaro cactus, known scientifically as Carnegiea gigantea, is a tree-like cactus, growing up to 53 feet high and native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, California, and Mexico. This long-lived, late-maturing species begins flowering at about 52 years of age and may live to be 200 years old. Scientists are concerned that the prolonged extreme heat is impacting this iconic plant of our desert southwest.
