The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, Bureau of Resource Information and Land Use Planning, is seeking to fill a vacancy for a Biologist II in Augusta, Maine.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:
The position is located in the Maine Natural Areas Program (MNAP), a division of the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, in Augusta.  The Forest Ecologist will be responsible for overseeing, prioritizing and conducting field-based inventory and research to document the location, condition, and status of Maine’s natural communities and ecosystems of statewide significance and Rare, Threatened, and Endangered plant species. Potential habitats for inventory will typically be identified using remote sensing tools.  The Forest Ecologist will also summarize and analyze information more broadly on the status and trends of biodiversity in Maine and communicate the results in both written and oral form to a variety of audiences and serve as the State expert on Maine’s natural communities and ecosystems.  Scientific support will frequently be provided to private landowners, land managers, and conservation organizations in need of assistance with natural resource inventories, land acquisition, development of management plans, and reviews of harvest prescriptions.  Finally, the position will assist with raising funds for program operations and special projects and may solicit and administer major contracts and project budgets to ensure that contractual and financial obligations are met.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelors Degree in Biology, Wildlife Management, or related field -AND- three (3) years experience in laboratory or field research of fish and wildlife including experience in a supervisory capacity.

Preference will be given to candidates with education, skills and/or experience in:
-Graduate degree in Forest Ecology, Conservation Biology, Forestry, Botany, or related subject.
-Strong field botanical skills for flora of NE United States and knowledge of Maine’s natural communities, ecosystems, and rare plants.
-Expertise with GIS, data management, and remote sensing for data transfer, data analysis, and map creation.
-Knowledge of forest management and timber harvesting principles, practices, and procedures.
-Familiarity with Natural Heritage program methodologies, vegetation sampling, and field survey design.
-Experience with project management, report writing, budgets, and fund raising.

Salary: $49,878.40 - $68,286.40 (includes a 5.5% stipend)
