What will you learn?
Longleaf pine ecosystems are an increasing focus of conservation interest and the subject of a regional collaborative restoration effort in the southeastern U.S. Longleaf pine has been reduced to less than 5% of its historic extent, with concurrent losses of the unique suite of wildlife species associated with these systems. Longleaf pine requires ongoing management interventions such as prescribed fire and thinning to maintain desired conditions of vegetation structure for wildlife. Historical evidence suggests that native longleaf pine forests were self-perpetuating, with multiple age classes of trees and ongoing recruitment of new cohorts of reproduction.
