Director of Plant Science
*Deadline: 08/05/2019
*Overview: California Native Plant Society is seeking a Director of Plant
Science with responsibility for developing strategy and advancing a
portfolio of projects. This full-time exempt senior position reports to CPS
Executive Director and leads a team of 4-8 employees and contractors,
likely to grow over time.
You will contribute to CNPS success by directing the following areas:

Strategy. Coordinate with the Executive Director, coworkers, and the
community to define overall strategy for CNPS plant science efforts. Ensure
projects support the strategy and advance its goals.

Rare Plants. Support the team of scientists responsible for the highly
esteemed CNPS Rare Plant Program. Ensure continued success of the Inventory
of Rare Plants, Rare Plant Treasure Hunts, California Plant Rescue, and
other key projects.

Nurseries and Plant Distribution. Work with stakeholders and the
community to define policies and protocols. Provide guidance to staff,
volunteers, and partners working to increase production and distribution of
high quality, disease‐free local plants. Support chapters and partners
updating production operations. Direct implementation of Re‐Oak and other
plant distribution/planting projects.

Plant science. Provide input and support to the range of plant sciences
activities, including promoting vouchering and botanical skills,
coordinating with Vegetation Science program, Certification for Consulting
Botanists, Fire Recovery Guide, development of local floras, etc.

Biodiversity Initiative. Actively participate in defining and advancing
this singular opportunity.

Strong background in plant science, knowledge of the California flora,
with experience in the key responsibility areas. Strong commitment to the
CNPS mission.

Proven ability to successfully manage science teams.

Proven ability to build and maintain productive positive relationships
with partner organizations and individuals, and to work productively with
diverse stakeholders and engaged volunteers.

Proven record of success working with a team to fund projects by
defining strategy, planning projects, and assisting development staff in
writing compelling funding requests.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Fluency in Spanish is
a plus.

Remote or flex schedules may be possible, but must be able to meet at
the Sacramento offices regularly.

Work involves travel to beautiful locales throughout California and is
reimbursed.
