[PCA] RFP: Pollinator Habitat Conservation Along Roadways

Managing vegetation highway ROWs is a complex issue for sure. Linear corridors are potential opportunities for pollinator habitat and reduced mowing as identified years ago by FHA (Bonnie Harper Lore) and more recently https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/publications/publicroads/07nov/01.cfm and https://www.environment.fhwa.dot.gov/env_topics/ecosystems/pollinators.aspx . Each ROW landscape position has unique issues that may require a level of risk analysis to address impacts of wildlife (small and large mammals, raptors, songbirds, etc.) and vehicle safety. Collateral damage to wildlife including pollinators and public safety may limit ROW habitat restoration sites. A benefit that is difficult to quantify is increase in native plant seedbank and dispersal from ROWs to the adjacent landscape.
As some municipalities develop “Native Plant Policies”, inclusion of state and federal transportation infrastructure and ROW planning should move forward collaboratively.

I once counted the number of butterflies I collided with on the highway driving home from the beach ( ~ 200 miles). I gave up at about 50 miles along the route after I had already hit 100. It was too depressing and I was getting distracted from driving.

Makes me worry about counting highway rights-of-way as good habitat for living creatures.

Sorry for any cross postings. Received notice about a National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) RFP to develop a pollinator habitat guidebook, with a focus on protecting and improving habitat adjacent to roadways. Handbook target audience: State DOTs and right-of-way owners. Proposals due January 17, 2019.
