[PCA] PCA Meeting Wednesday Jan 10

This is a reminder that the next Plant Conservation Alliance meeting is
this Wednesday, January 10th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm ET.

*"What are we doing to recover plants at risk? A comparison of policies and
progress under Canada’s Species at Risk Act and the U.S. Endangered Species
Act"*

The PCA is excited to welcome Dr. Jeannette Whitton, Director of University
of British Columbia Herbarium, Canada's SARAH & COSEWIC to speak with us
about her
research from 2:00-3:00 pm ET, on January 10th. Dr. Whitton is a plant
evolutionary biologist whose research aims to explain the origin, spread,
and persistence of new lineages, using focal species complexes in plants.
She currently focuses on two groups in the sunflower family, the Rocky
Mountain genus *Townsendia*, and the North American *Crepis* complex, both
of which include derived asexual (apomictic) lineages that have arisen and
now share the landscape with their sexual progenitors. However, her
presentation here will be about her involvement with the *Species at Risk
Act* (SARA), Canada’s analog to the U.S. *Endangered Species ActI *(ESA*)*.
She will talk about her analysis of the implementation of the act, focusing
on plant examples, and highlighting differences and similarities between
the kids of species that are at risk in Canada and the US, and the types of
measures that are proposed for their recovery. Her findings in some ways
parallel challenges seen in the implementation of the ESA, but differences
in the structure of the act, jurisdictional issues, and the nature of the
biota translate into a distinct set of challenges and objectives for
biodiversity conservation in the two countries.

*Please note, our meeting will be held at a different facility this month.*

Council

**More about Dr. Jeannette Whitton**

Jeannette is an Associate Professor in the Department of Botany and the
Biodiversity Research Centre at the University of British Columbia, where
she also serves as Director of the UBC Herbarium. Her B.Sc. in
Environmental Biology at McGill was followed by a Ph.D. in Plant
Systematics from The University of Connecticut, after which she completed a
postdoc at Indiana University. She has been at UBC since 1997. In addition
to her primary research in plant evolutionary ecology and systematics, she
served for eight years (2007-2014) as a member of the Committee on the
Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), an expert panel
appointed by government to conduct independent assessments of Canada’s
species, and whose advice forms the basis of listing decisions made by the
federal government. Her involvement with COSEWIC has led her to pursue
analyses of the implementation of the Species at Risk Act. These analyses
have been disseminated through peer-reviewed publications, Op-eds, and
presentations to the public, decision makers and the scientific community.

Thank you.
