A comparison of policies and progress under Canada’s Species at Risk Act and the U.S. Endangered Species Act"</b><div style="font-size:12.8px"><br></div><div style="font-size:12.8px">The PCA is excited to welcome Dr. Jeannette Whitton, Director of University of British Columbia Herbarium, Canada's SARAH & COSEWIC to speak with us about her</div><div style="font-size:12.8px">research from 2:00-3:00 pm ET, on January 10th. Dr. Whitton is a plant evolutionary biologist whose<span style="font-size:12.8px"> research aims to explain the origin, spread, and persistence of new lineages, using focal species complexes in plants. She currently focuses on two groups in the sunflower family, the Rocky Mountain genus </span><i style="font-size:12.8px">Townsendia</i><span style="font-size:12.8px">, and the North American </span><i style="font-size:12.8px">Crepis</i><span style="font-size:12.8px"> complex, both of which include derived asexual (apomictic) lineages that have arisen and now share the landscape with their sexual progenitors. However, her presentation here will be about her involvement with the </span><i style="font-size:12.8px">Species at Risk Act</i><span style="font-size:12.8px"> (SARA), Canada’s analog to the U.S. </span><i style="font-size:12.8px">Endangered Species ActI </i><span style="font-size:12.8px">(ESA</span><i style="font-size:12.8px">)</i><span style="font-size:12.8px">. She will talk about her analysis of the implementation of the act, focusing on plant examples, and highlighting differences and similarities between the kids of species that are at risk in Canada and the US, and the types of measures that are proposed for their recovery. Her B.Sc. in Environmental Biology at McGill was followed by a Ph.D. in Plant Systematics from The University of Connecticut, after which she completed a postdoc at Indiana University. She has been at UBC since 1997. In addition to her primary research in plant evolutionary ecology and systematics, she served for eight years (2007-2014) as a member of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), an expert panel appointed by government to conduct independent assessments of Canada’s species, and whose advice forms the basis of listing decisions made by the federal government. Her involvement with COSEWIC has led her to pursue analyses of the implementation of the Species at Risk Act.
