I just found out about a new resource, set up and maintained by the National Audubon Society. It’s a Native Plants Database at http://www.audubon.org/native-plants, and anyone can just type in a zip code to get an illustrated list of bird-friendly plants that are native to that zip code. Ostensibly, many of the plants that pop up on the list (i.e., the flowering plants) would have value for pollinators too.
When I did this for my zip code (02476), I got a list of 93 species. I was happy to see many of my favorite edible native species on that list.
Anyone familiar with this tool, and, if so, what do you think of it?

I agree, Johnny. This could be such a great resource but they just do not get it.
I tested NatiVeg on an area in east-central Illinois. All cultivars, many from well outside of our area. Sure these nativars are interesting because they have atypical colors or flower forms but they do not belong in our restorations.

Interesting – I tested the NatiVeg link for a forb in my Piedmont NC area and it gave me a Helianthus species CULTIVAR introduced from the Western US. I am not impressed.
