This article investigated the discrepancies between predicted plant
extinctions and documented extinctions. Two possible explanations present
themselves. First, there may be many undocumented extinctions. Second,
there may be a long extinction lag time. The author introduces the phrase
"living dead" to describe those species that are effectively extinct and
introduces conservation strategies, including seed banking, to learn as
much about species before they go extinct.
