Biological Science Technician (plants), 18/8; GS-404-5/7
Kaibab National Forest, North Kaibab Ranger District

ABOUT THE POSITION
The position is out of the North Kaibab Ranger District office in Fredonia,
Arizona. The majority of the position (60%) is identifying, finding and
eradicating weeds. Qualified applicant must have or obtain an Arizona
Commercial Applicator Certification (license) within 120 days of
appointment and complete ongoing training to maintain the certification.
Additional duties (40%) may include providing technical support to the
range and wildlife resource programs. A strong candidate will have native
and non-native plant identification skills.

The position is a permanent seasonal position which guarantees 18 pay
periods of employment (February – November) and subject to furlough for 8
pay periods (December-January). Government housing is not available with
this position.

The North Kaibab Ranger District encompasses a variety of ecosystems,
terrain, and climate. Elevations on the district vary from 3,500 feet to
9,000 feet. This variance also relates to climate which can bring
temperatures over 100 degrees and extremely low humidity during the summer
in the lower elevations and well below freezing temperatures with heavy
snows in the high country during the winter.

THE COMMUNITY OF FREDONIA...
was settled in 1885 and lies in the northernmost part of Coconino County at
an elevations of 4700 feet. Arizona Highway 89A runs right through the
center of town and is a highly traveled route for tourists visiting the
area. We consider both Fredonia and Kanab, UT as “our communities”.
Fredonia has a population of about 1100 residents, while Kanab is larger
with about 3500 in population. The communities has three schools with
grades K-12, several businesses (motels, gas stations, hardware, gift
shops, etc.), banks, medical facilities, supermarkets, restaurants and many
church denominations. Kanab is located about 7 miles north of Fredonia.

The towns may seem small, but the lure of more remote outdoor experiences
is what attracts visitors to this area. With the majority of visitors
traveling to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, the North Rim is
lesser visited due to it remoteness but boasts higher elevations, cooler
temperatures, and lush vegetation.

To the east of Fredonia/Kanab is the Grand Staircase-Escalante National
Monument, and to the northwest are Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks,
all no more than 1.5 hours away.

While Kanab, Utah has many attractions for tourists, Fredonia maintains a
simpler and quieter lifestyle.
