DUTIES:

This position is located in the United States Botanic Garden (USBG),
Horticulture Division, Collections Section. The position represents the
USBG as a national leader in orchid collection and conservation. The
incumbent is responsible for selecting and maintaining the most of the
USBG's accessioned orchid collection. The incumbent will also assist the
Curator with cacti and succulents, tropical and subtropical, carnivorous
plants, rare and endangered species, plants maintained under the Convention
on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), plants of economic
and therapeutic importance, and other related plant collections.
More specifically, the incumbent will perform the following duties and
responsibilities:
- Horticulture Advice and Guidance - Provides advice and technical
assistance about specific horticultural projects to individuals in public,
private, or nonprofit agencies and organizations. Serves as internal and
external liaison for educational programs and training
coordination/delivery related specifically to orchid propagation and
conservation. Provides support in obtaining and completing documentation
necessary for international plant exchanges.
- Plant Collection and Design Work - Maintains a semi-natural area as a
research and educational resource for the public, researchers, educators,
and professionals. Performs background research and makes recommendations
regarding which specimens to utilize in displays. Develops permanent and
seasonal horticultural exhibits with a range of standard and non-standard
plants. Formulates short and long-term plans to develop, enhance, and
maintain horticultural displays.
- Plant Production Work - Develops and maintains a plant propagation
program that includes sexual and asexual propagation techniques, tissue
culture and fungi cultivation to support orchid propagation and a wide
range of rare and/or endangered plant species.
- Horticultural Studies and Investigations - Designs and implements
experiments; gathers data, and conducts statistical analysis of data to
produce accurate information for data management, record keeping, and
reporting on endangered species. Recognizes problems and their scientific
implications; modifies or adapts methods and techniques to solve the
problems encountered.
- Care and Propagation of Plants - Leads the plant propagation program
taking into consideration micro-propagation, laboratory development, and
ex-situ horticultural collection factors. Selects, measures, mixes, and
applies minerals and nutrients by adjusting soil conditions (pH) to provide
optimum growth conditions.
