Position Announcement

Position Title:  Fish & Wildlife Science Coordinator
Location:  Washington, DC

Established in 1902, the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies
represents North America’s fish and wildlife agencies and provides a
unified voice on science-based management of the nation’s fish and wildlife
and their habitats. The Association works with Congress, the Administration
and private conservation partners to advance the interests of its members.

Responsibilities
The Science Coordinator, under the direction of the Wildlife Diversity
Director, is responsible for identifying science needs, assisting with
policy development and coordinating with federal agencies, private
conservation organizations and others. The coordinator provides staff
support to Association committees and serves as the science liaison to the
four regional state fish and wildlife associations.  The coordinator works
directly with state fish and wildlife agency science staff and federal
agencies including the U. S. Geological Survey, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, U. S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land
Management, and USDA’s APHIS Wildlife Services.

Specific Duties

   - Serve as the Association’s liaison to the states and federal partners
   to enhance communication, improve science delivery, and ensure coordination
   and collaboration on priority science and research needs.
   - Provides support to the Association’s Science and Research Committee,
   Climate Change Committee, Fish and Wildlife Health Committee, and others as
   assigned.
   - Oversee development of an annual work plan that identifies shared
   science coordination priorities between state and federal agencies.
   - Provide training through workshops, webinars, and seminars to
   disseminate information and resources to state fish and wildlife agency
   staff and others on climate change, fish and wildlife health, and fish and
   wildlife management.
   - Write and review white papers, guidance documents, resolutions, and
   policy statements, and give presentations to advance science and research
   interests.
   - Assess science and research needs of states through surveys and other
   means.
   - Serve as the point of contact for climate change and support
   implementation of the National, Fish, Wildlife, and Plants Climate
   Adaptation Strategy.
   - Provide supervision and support to the Climate Adaptation Assistant.
   - Act as the AFWA lead for the Climate Academy and serve as staff
   support for states serving on the Advisory Committee on Climate Change and
   Natural Resource Science.
   - Coordinate with state and federal agencies on wildlife disease issues
   and assist with implementation of the AFWA Fish and Wildlife Health
   Initiative.
   - Assist with development of federal budget recommendations.
   - Provide staff assistance to Controlled Substance Act Task Force
   - Attend meetings in the DC-area and in other locations requiring
   overnight stays including but not limited to the Association’s annual
   meeting, the North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference,
   regional fish and wildlife association meetings, and professional
   scientific meetings.

Qualifications
PhD in fisheries or wildlife management, conservation biology, ecology or a
closely related field (preferred) and 2+ years of policy work experience.
 Knowledge of, and experience working for, a state fish and wildlife,
and/or federal agency desired.  Other combinations of education and work
experience will be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The desired candidate will be self-motivated, have strong leadership skills
and a successful track record working independently and as a team member.
 Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be
detailed-oriented, able to meet deadlines, manage multiple projects and
have strong organizational and project management skills.
