The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has extended its deadline for comments
on the DRAFT Guidance on Selecting Species for Design of Landscape-scale
Conservation to Friday, March 29, 2013. The extended deadline accommodates
a request from states to allow more time for review. The draft guidance
outlines a collaborative and science-based process to identify a subset of
surrogate species that can best represent other species or aspects of the
species’ environment within a defined landscape or geography. This is a
practical step in using the Strategic Habitat Conservation (SHC) approach
and the best-known science to plan, design and conserve landscapes
supporting multiple species.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employees can submit comments on the draft
technical guidance via this internal online comment form. States, Tribes,
and other partners can submit comments via an external online comment
form<https://fishnet.fws.doi.net/projects/home/shc/Lists/Input%20Form%20for%20Draft%20Guidance%20on%20Selecting%20Species/NewForm.aspx>
 at http://www.fws.gov/landscape-conservation/public-comments.cfm. Comments
also can be submitted via email at shc at fws.gov.

Input from Service employees and partners will be used to refine and
improve the draft technical guidance, which is expected to be finalized,
following independent peer-review, later in 2013. For more information, visit
