Ana Botanic Garden maintains laboratory facilities, manages use of them by
research scientists / faculty, students and visitors, and assists in
research an activity therein; collaborates on projects with other staff of
the Conservation Botany program.

Laboratory Manager
*Reports To: Judith B. Friend Director of Research*
*Status: Full-Time, Exempt Position*

*Duties and Responsibilities*
- Maintains organized, clean, safe, and efficiently operating
laboratories.
- Maintains databases of equipment, supplies, samples (DNA, wood anatomy
slides, etc.), and protocols.
- Obtains price quotations and orders supplies and equipment as needed.
- Maintains equipment, including routine maintenance.
- Initiates work orders for in-house (and as required external) service
and maintenance of equipment.
- Coordinates disposal of waste chemicals.
- Implements policy for use of the laboratory, including safety
protocols.
- Handles in-house billing for laboratory use.
- With supervisor, develops an annual operating budget for the
laboratories, oversees expenses in context of budgets; undertakes periodic
review and revisions as necessary of fee schedule.
- Keeps abreast of new laboratory techniques.
- Provides training and technical support for students, research
associates, and visiting researchers.
- Performs outside DNA sequencing requests.
- Coordinates tours of the laboratories for visitors, classes, and
others as requested.
- Graduate lab assistants, Interns and volunteers, as well as first-time
users of the facilities.
- Assists faculty members with laboratory research.
- Participates in Conservation Botany Program contracts and projects
(may include proposal preparation, data generation, reporting, invoicing,
preparation of scientific papers).
- Other duties as assigned.
*Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities*
- Ability to organize work independently and to maintain an accurate log
of laboratory activities.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
with faculty, research associates, students, and visiting researchers.
- Working knowledge of computer systems and peripherals, e.g., digital
camera, as well as software applications such as word processing,
databasing, and imaging (specifically Adobe Photoshop).
- Experience with molecular laboratory techniques, such as DNA
extraction, PCR amplification, DNA sequencing, and microsatellite analysis.
- Experience with plant tissue fixation, storage, and processing; rotary
and sliding microtomy; slide- staining protocols and cover slipping of
prepared specimens.
- Experience with microscopy and photomicrography.
- Experience with operation of scanning electron microscope [SEM],
including sputter coater and critical-point dryer.
- Possess strong writing and oral communication skills.
*Qualifications*
- Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent and suitable experience in
laboratory techniques required for this position; M.S. degree and/or
research experience preferred.
