Job Summary
This position is made possible by Sustain Our Great Lakes Program and The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for the restoration of Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake Habitat and education and interpretation related to this work. The project will be conducted at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens property in the Fleming Creek floodplain and adjacent upland areas. It will involve managing invasive plant species using a variety of techniques and strategies, assisting with prescribed burns, leading staff and volunteer workdays, helping to create interpretive signs, collecting, managing and presenting GIS data, and assisting with workshops related to the project work.
Required Qualifications*
Bachelors in Natural Resources or related field, familiarity with MI native plants and ecosystems, a current Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicators license or willingness to obtain one, and willing and able to work outdoors for extended periods through the fall, winter and spring, hiking off-trail through a variety of natural areas are required. GIS/GPS course work and some experience using GIS/GPS are required. Personal transportation is required.
Desired Qualifications*
Previous experience in managing invasive plants in Michigan, prescribed burning, using chainsaws and brush cutters, and leading volunteer and/or staff workdays are desired. Experience creating interpretive signs and with outdoor education desired.
Additional Information
This position is term limited beginning September 1, 2011 and ending August 31, 2012. Annual renewal of this position is contingent upon grant funding.
