About the Position
This position is a Botanist/Ecologist for the Sawtooth National Forest.
Specific duties are to provide professional, scientific assistant to the
Forest Supervisor.s staff and to provide assistance and training to the
District Ranger.s staff in dealing with Threatened, Endangered, Proposed,
Candidate, and sensitive (TEPCS) plant species and botany. The incumbent
serves as a specialist in the field of botany with responsibility for
managing the Threatened, Endangered, Proposed, Candidate, and sensitive
(TEPCS) plant species program, including advising the Regional Office
regarding changes and updates to the Forest Sensitive Species List. The
incumbent serves as the Research Natural Area coordinator for the Forest
and provides input into the designation and management of Botanical
Special Interest Areas (BSIA). The incumbent provides leadership,
training and supervision for the other botanist(s) on the Forest (zone
and/or temporary botanists). The incumbent writes reviews and signs
biological assessments/evaluations to insure compliance with Section 7 ESA
1973 as amended and FSM 2670-R6, 2672.24b-2676.17e, and covers management
of fieldwork on the Minidoka Ranger District. The incumbent is the lead
for the Castilleja christii, a candidate species, conservation agreement
implementation. This involves coordination with USFWS, annual population
monitoring, invasive species treatments and detailed reporting. The
incumbent coordinates with other Federal and State agencies and develops
partnerships with the private sector regarding TEPCS plants and Botany
program. The incumbent serves as the Forest TESP and TERRA data steward
and is responsible for implementation, population and quality control of
this and the WFRP national corporate databases. The incumbent also
provides leadership in the development of Native Plant Materials for
restoration and Special Botanical Products programs for the Forest. The
incumbent provides Botany and TES plant related environmental education
and products for Celebrating Wildflowers, Pollinators, and interpretive
Native Plant Gardens. The incumbent acts as contracting officer.s
representative (COR) for botany related contracts on the Forest. The
position is the Forest representative on the Level 1 Team for
consultation. The position reports to the GS-13 Natural Resource,
Recreation, and Lands Officer.
About the Forest
The 2.1 million acre Sawtooth National Forest is divided into four
management units . the Minidoka, Ketchum and Fairfield Ranger Districts
and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Elevations range from 4,513 to
12,009 feet above sea level offering a great variety of land forms and
vegetation. The Forest extends from northern Utah to the Salmon River
country in Idaho and includes 149 range allotments on which more than
44,570 sheep and 24,348 cattle graze. More than 2 million visitor days of
recreation occur annually on the Forest with four downhill ski areas,
including the world-premiere Bald Mountain Ski Area at Sun Valley. The
Forest administers the 217,088-acre Sawtooth Wilderness in addition to
three other areas, totaling more than 270,700 acres, recommended for
wilderness classification. The Forest provides habitat to 10 listed T & E
Species, 17 Sensitive Wildlife & Fish Species and 36 Sensitive Plant
Species. Approximately 5 million board feet of timber are offered
annually. There are approximately 100 permanent/full-time employees on
the Forest in addition to 100 seasonal employees.
