Woodlands struggling to recapture former glory

Jim Steffen reeled off names from a long list of missing species: Turk's 
cap lily, Joe-Pye weed, two-flowered Cynthia, zig zag goldenrod, 
maidenhair fern, silky wild rye.

"You go into a buckthorn thicket and repeat those names and they aren't 
there anymore," said the ecologist at the Chicago Botanic Garden in 
Glencoe. "You have poison ivy, but all the interesting and diverse plants 
are missing now."
